As we slip deeper into September, Football fans in the US of A will while away weekend hours in front of their televisions cheering on football players and cussing out the referees. Outside, the day might be absolute perfection, but inside is where thousands++++ devoted fans of Football will be.
That was the simplest way I could explain a not so simple explanation. And here I call myself a writer.
>In Italy fans go wild over calcio; (football to them, soccer in the U.S.A.) Italy's top domestic league, Serie A, plays games September through May, mainly on Sunday.
>Spain's number one sport is futbol, again, USA's equivalent of soccer. From September to May you can catch up to four games a week. Tuesdays are Championship game days.
>In Japan, football vies with cricket as the most popular sport
> In Poland, piłka nożna, football is the reigning sport
The football loving countries are in the thousands. But the team names are what really fascinated me. USA team names are nowhere near the same league, or ballpark as:
Llanfairpwll FC, the football club based in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobw
llllantysiliogogogoch, (I'm not making this up!)
a community on the island of Anglesey, NW Wales
!!**(Anglesey is where Ava Fychon, heroine in my historical Almost Taken, hails from)
kaiwhenuakitanatahu; (This is all one word but it wouldn't fit across the page) a hill in New Zealand named by the Maoris and shortened to Taumata which is the name of the football club there (what a mouthful for cheerleaders!)
Nooit opgeven altijd doorgaan, Aangenaam door vermaak en nuttig door ontspanning, Combinatie Breda.
The Botswana Meat Commission Football Club is based in Lobatse. Fans refer to the team as The MeatMen.
Panthessaloníkios Athlitikós Ómilos Konstantinoupolitón which in English means "Pan-Thessalonian Athletic Club of Constantinopolitans"
There are hundreds more but I'll stop with this Norwegian football club located in Vang:
I can't stop the thought that if that many fans supported just one dire issue in our world- so many to choose from!- imagine the impact its fans would have.
Is there a sport team you root for? If so, why?
