Gus was born in a zoo in Toledo, Ohio and came to the CPZ in Manhattan as a three year old in 1988. A few years after he arrived people began noticing that Gus had odd swimming habits. Who ever heard of a polar bear swimming laps in figure-eight patterns? Backstroke? Every day, up to twelve hours per day Gus swam; a 700 pound white furry windup toy with no stop button.
His adult weight was nearly 1000 pounds
After months of studying him and working therapeutic techniques the animal behaviorist made this conclusion: Gus is bored.
